Playing with Pastels: Crowd Pleaser: Fearful of adding people to your painting? "Runnin' with the Crowd", pastel, 6x6" I had always felt intimidated about adding figures to my paintings. But in Tony Allain's workshop this summer I learned some easy tips to make it look easy.

Reasons to add figures to your paintings...

  • When you add people to your landscape paintings you give the piece more of a sense of proportion
  • People add to the "story" and emotion of the painting

Scumbling and Blending and Glazing... Oh My!

Well, I think it is time for a little pastel technique talk! I often use the term "blending" and I think most of you know what I mean. Blending is means gently rubbing together two pastels on the surface to create a new color. Sometimes we might use our finger or a blending tool to do this, but it is best to let the pastels do it themselves. This is achieved best by using sticks of the same hardness. That is how I achieved the colors of the taffy in this painting. But what is scumbling and glazing? They are both much like blending, but... Scumbling is lightening a color by lightly covering the color with a lighter tint. Glazing is darkening a color by lightly covering the color with a darker shade. Learning Something New is Hard!

    Autumn Leaves Begin to Fall Learning something new is hard, but it is usually worth it. In the past month I was lucky enough to be able to take two plein air workshops with two pastel legends - Liz Haywood Sullivan and Frank Federico ! It was not easy for me, that is for sure, but I really learned a lot. I even applied some under painting techniques from Liz's workshop to Frank's. Not sure I will ever be a plein air painter, but it was good to stretch myself.  New classes are starting this week on October 17th from 1 - 4 at the Northlight Art Center in Sharon, CT.   Beginning to Draw and Paint with Pastels  10/ 17 - 11/21 1 - 4 PM This class is for students who want to work on improving drawing skills and those interested in exploring color using pastels.
